The name of
Nainital and its emergence reads like a fantasy. And the present
towns - like AImora Kumaon and the township around the renowned take Nainital are the
gifts of Britishers who realising its rich potential developed it into a premier
Summer Resort of India. In the dim past the original inhabitants, mostly
shepherds building a small temple for the Goddess of Eye-Naini Devi, sought
her eternal vigilance and called the lake Nainital - a lake with the temple for
the Goddess of Eye. Later Raja Kalyan of Chand dynasty founded this Himalayan
region and ruled it from Almora as capital. Handloom industry boasted its
