Besides the regular rituals the
odd tradition
of 'Thookain' is offered to the deity by fairly a large number of devotees. It is
a unique custom of lifting the body of the devotee on a hook fixed into the skin
on his back and taking him round the Srikoil.
It is offered in reademption of vow taken to Mother Bhagawati for the preferring
immense relief. Hence the
continuation of its implementation. If belief fetches tangible benefit, people
neither care for the scientists, pooh poohing, nor resorting to other practices
given wide publicity by the vested interests. This age old convention
deserves approbation even by the atheists, says a local vociferously backed by personal
observation.
