On the Savitri
Amavasya Day falling on the dark moon night of Jyeshta masa corresponding to
May-June, unmanageable women folk throng this shrine, to offer special prayers
for obtaining long life to their spouses just as Savitri did according to
mythology. Their frenzy reaches the zenith with the recitation of vedic hymns and
the traditional pujas consuming hours signifying that Hindu women are basically
spiritual and that has been sustaining them since the dawn of devotion.
It
is here found two more small shrines dedicated to Yama, the God of Death and
another deity called Shasthy the giver of good progeny who is worshipped in the
form of Linga, whereas Yama reveals as a grand statue sitting on his vehicle
buffalo. The other worshipful deities found here are two Sivalingas installed in
a tiny cell.
Though
regular prayer is offered to Savitri the annual festival draws innumerable woman
devotees requiring the help of police to regulate crowds.
As
this famous shrine is in Bhuvaneswar, the capital of Orissa state all modes of
conveyance is available front station and bus stand, Autos and tongas can be
pressed into service also.
