The
name 'Savitri' conjures up a terrific scene of confrontation between a fragile
piece of feminine mortal figure and the fiercest looking tall stalwart celestial
being who alas was out-vetted and so rained boons out of proportion. The
mythology of Savithri and Satyavan is so popular and every Hindu virgin prays
and vows to becoming a prototype of that noble lady whose chastity won laurels
to womanhood. Her steadfast devotion to her husband not only breathed life into
his dead body, but got back kingdom to her father-in-law and many more. She
turned the ideal of every Hindu woman and stands as a touch stone of untainted
purity. So humanity erected shrines in maw places and installed her statue to offering
daily.
One
such shrine is found in Bhuvaneswar, the metropolitan capital of Orissa. It lies
to the southern side of Lingaraj temple, the crest jewel of Orissa temples. Here
the odditv that greets the theists and tourists is the Linga symbolising Savitri
instead of icon of any shape or size. So Linga is not monopolised by Maheswar
and at places like Alampur Brahma is worshipped in the form of Linga etc. Here
the Linga standing for Savitri is receiving unparalleled devotion by thousands
and thousands of women.
