  PERIAPALEYAM - BHAGAWATHI TEMPLE

This presiding deity established for herself a great reputation that he who worships her passionately ever complains of failure in wordly life, as success comes to him as sure as water flows down from higher level to lower. And she is the august amsa of Lord Siva's Jwalamurti, one of his ashtamurtis. She is called Bhavani also. She is balipriya with a difference. She resents Narabali, but receives hen or goat as offerings. She is visited by thousands and thousands during the Sundays of Adi masa, when the whole place reverberates with devotional activities of several kinds. She bestows grace and relieves from any type of torment affecting her children. Here is a strange tradition followed since the beginning-women worshippers visit the Mother with neem leaf sarees and circumambulate the giarbha griha with utmost devotion. They redeem the vows taken by offering special prayer service. Daily worship is carried with rituals due Dreadful contagious and infectious diseases take to flight, if she is worshipped soulfully With several such odd and awe-some traditions, this temple is ascending higher and higher on the ladder of fame.

It lies 25 km. off Madras, the capital of Tamil Nadu, accessible by city bus or four wheelers.
