The
ancient name of Tirumaraikkadu goes now by the fantastic awe-some name of
Vedaranyam. In Puranas it is mentioned as Satyagiri and Adisethu. According to
them, this place, and the presiding deity Siva were worshipped with unbounded
devotion. It was then a thick forest, and so was called Vedavanyam and Marikkadu.
The
temple built in the South Indian architectural design is vast in dimensions with
sturdy prakaras, broad mahadwara surmounted by tall towers. And it resembles
Tiruvarur temple in constructional pattern. The Mother's shrine stands to the
right side of Siva's temple. It is one of the Sakti-pPeethas and the Mother is
called Sundarapeetha Nayaki or Sundarapeetha Sundari. As is the name, so is the
idol that hypnotises the viewers by her enchanting pleasant Sowmyavadana. She
acquired the name of Varaprasadi due to lavish grant of boons on her adorers.
Besides fulfilling the desires of the bhaktas, she relieves the evil effects of
billisunyam, graha dosha and witch craft.
