It
is quite fascinating to hear the interpretation of the locals that Mariamman
means rain giving mother; since Mari stands rain, and she showers mercy just as
black clouds give rain. Are not prosperity, peace and progress depending upon
rain? In any century or in any place for that matter. Why in any time also. That
rain symbolising grace emerges from the Mother. That is the reason why, both
class and mass adore her passionately. Throughout the length and breadth of the
country without any exception, to speak the truth.
The
Kottai Mariamman is the supreme deity presiding over several other Mariammans
installed in almost all street corners, or under trees in Salem town. As she
pours down auspiciousness-subham or mangalam over this place, it can be
fittingly termed Mangalampur. The august seat of this Varaprasadi and
Abhyudayakarini is located in the centre of the city and is very near bus stand.
Moreover, it is on the eastern bank of the river Tirumanimuthar.
