The
word 'Tanjore' conjures up a vision of a series of multi-coloured pictures of
mighty rulers, who by their matchess Valour and benigh administration bought
undying fame to South India that is Dakshinapatha. It has been the seat of power for
scores of dynasties that ruled from time immemorial. Their religion city manifested in
building temples offers such rich fare to eyes, that nothing stands equal to it
in any tense of time. The Brihadeeswaralayam built by that immortal Rajaraja
is a standing challenge that none could venture to enshrine a Sivalinga of that
size and stature in a temple whose tower piercing into the blue sky showed the
Patron's glory to the celestials
and so was hailed as the Dakshina Meru. Its unique glory
filled hundred of
pages of temple history of our Punya Bharat.
As we go round
frond one end to another, we come across many type of imposing statues exuding; sculptural
excellences to the astonishment
of visitors as it were. These shrines are dedicated to Vinayaka, Subrahamanya,
Parvathi and many other adorable personages, like Dwarapalakas and Jain saints
along with
a fair sprinkling of the emancipated demons and Nandi of the
highlights of
this superb shrine grand frescos in the inner
courtyard deserve mention and indispensable attention since they are reminiscent
of the splendid. Ajantha cave paintings of eternal reputation. Next in
importance
is the Mother's shrine.
