  TIRUKKADAVUR - ABHIRAMI TEMPLE

The Sivalinga bears the signs of pasa thrown for dragging Markandeya from Sivalinga, lie clung tightly in fear of death. Kalasankaramurti is seen in terrific aspect with Trisul stretched pointing to Yama who fell prostrate at the sight of Siva emerging from the Linga. And Mother Abhirami is standing next to Siva to appease the anger of Siva and also stand witness to the entire happening. Markandeya's image in standing posture with folded hands is masterly carved. The Mother's presence at the terrific scene speaks volumes of her boundless compassion. Abhirama Bhattar composed 100 songs in praise the Mother and her vatsalya. And they are inscribed on walls. Devaram songs also eulogized the glory of the Mother. The author of Tiruvilayadal puranam Jyoti muni has also sung in praise of Mother and Lord. Here is a speciality observed on the Mondays of Karthika masa every year. The maha abhishekam with 1008 sankhus is offered to the icon in the belief that Markandeya offered to this Lord similarly and was saved. Regular worship is offered with rituals due.

Tirukkadavur lies between Mayiladuthurai and Taragambadi railway line and can be reached by four wheelers.
