This
came into existence after the death of Raktabija, a formidable rakshasa who
created hell for all devas in their heaven itself. When the afflicted met Lord
Siva for help, he advised them to do penance in Himalayas to getting Devi's
compassion. When implemented his advice Mother Mahamaya appearing assured
destruction of that formidable danava and conferring of beatitude. She did.
The
place where she killed lies on the bank of Mandakini river on the other side of
Kedarnath shrine and it acquired great name. It is one of the prestigious Sakti
sthals in Himalayan region. It is here lie three independent temples for
Mahalakshmi, Mahakali and Mahasaraswathi. And each has a sacred tank. Several
periodical festivals are celebrated with great pomp and pageantry. They received
endowments from royal families like the king of Dharbanga who was blessed with
heir to his kingdom on ardent prayers.
