Famous
as one of the Sakti-Peethas, this Bhagavathi temple has many unique features,
reflecting many characteristic traditional beliefs of Hindus. It is a hill
temple lying on the bank of river Sharda in the Almora district of Uttar
Pradesh, bordering on Nepal, the lone Hindu kingdom in the world. The ascent to
the Mother's sannidhis is very difficult and tests the adorers' faith. There are
two Dharmasalas on the way to succour relief and remove the fatigue of uphill
climbing. Their presence and moreso catering with needed snacks, they enable the
devotees to recoup their energies and make the trip endurable besides enjoyable.
One among the many special features that greet the eyes is the green trees with
sumptuous growth of foliage not only pleases the eyes but bring cool breeze and
soothe the tortured bodies. The reason for their luxurious growth is quite
fantastic, but represents the psyche of Indians. It is believed that the trees
are the divine form of Bhagavathi and she dwells in them. Hence the injection of
not cutting trees for any purpose, like using for fuel or building needs. If any
wilful negligence is shown by any, snakes and other poisonous creatures soon
appear and teach the intruders to honour the customs. Another awe-some belief
current in this region is if ladies or gents are indulging in immoral
relationship like premarital or post marital connections, they are punished with
the loss of sight-turn blind soon. People leading licentious life are mortally
afraid of reaching the Mother's temple .
