This
ancient Subrahmanya kshetra is said to have been built by Sri Vishnu
Thirthaswamy, the brother of Sri Madhwacharya, the first head of Sode Mutt at
Udipi, a renowned Madhwa kshetra of inter continental reputation. It is built in
the Dravidian architectural style and strictly conforms to the Vastu Sastra.
Along with this, he built the Subrahmanya Mutt and it lies in the same compound
separated, but by a wall. On account of its establishment by an- eminent Madhwa
matha Acharya, and ably administered by the spiritual head, it is visited by
Madhwas in great numbers, throughout the year. There is a big tank here going by
the name of Darpana thirtha deemed very holy and purges of the sins of the
bathers. Every visitor enters the shrine only after taking bath in this. The
image of the Lord in standing posture decorated artistically with flower
garlands and gorgeous robes casts a spell and bends the heads of the visitors in
veneration. On account of its location amidst dense forest with tall trees and
thick evergreen bushes, the visitors feel enthralled at the extravagance of
scenic beauty and turn oblivious of themselves. It is a tourists centre and
aesthetes paradise. Hence the government's keen interest in improving lodging
and transport facilities. It is visited by several religious leaders, and they
praised the presiding deity in sweet verses. Among them, the name of Sri
Vadiraja Guru Sarvabhouma merits first mention. His immortal verses are sung on
important occasions. The head of the Subrahmanya Mutt is in charge of
administration and under his able and efficient governance, this kshetra is
making commendable progress. Nityanaimithika prayer services are carried on
according to agama tenets.
It
lies 166 km off Udipi, accessible by bus or car from nearby towns like
Mangalore, one of the famous towns of Karnataka.
