When they sought Siva Peruman's refuge, he directed them to go
and worship Muruga at this place. Listening to their pathetic plight, Lord
Muruga forthwith ordained Saneswar to release them from his clutch. He did. Then
the released gods prayed that Saneswar should not harass anyone, if he visits
and worships Murugan and Saneswar here. Pleased with their humanism, both
agreed. And since then the star-crossed humanity is rushing to be under the
all-protective umbrella of Muruga.
According
to another legend, Manmatha at the behest of Devendra went to Kailas to disturb
Siva's penance, but Nandi at the gate barred his entry. He went to another
portal, where Bringi was keeping guard, but fortunately he was in deep slumber.
So Manmatha entered and tried to accomplish his work commissioned. Lord Siva
knowing the intrusion due to Bringi's slackness, cursed Bringi to be born as man
and worship Muruga at Suralimali. And then burnt Manmatha for his folly. So one
sees here the Bringi image in the act of worship.
Thus
this place has immense spiritual powers and relieves the adorers from evil
effects. Nityanaimithika worship is offered .with utmost devotional fervor.
It
is 112 km off Madurai and very nearer to Cumbum, accessible by bus at all hours.
