Despite
being an integral part of the world-renowned Vaideeswaran temple, this imposing
sannidhi has special and unique. traditions as that of a separate, independent
temple. In the main temple, Lord Siva, as healer of all ailments is worshipped
in the name of Vaideeswaran and Mother Parvathi in the role of Thaiyal
Nayaki, assisting him as mid-wife in two sannidhis. They are independent of each
other. The grand temple facing east is exclusively set apart for Murugan and he
is adored in the name of Selvamuthu Kumaraswamy. According to legend, Murugan
received his potent weapon "Vel' from his father Maheswar here before
entering the war theatre. So held very s ared. This happened on the fifth day of
Panguni masa, so Brahmotsav is celebrated on this day on a grand scale. Murugan
worships Siva for blessing him, with such mahaayudha, that alone brought him
victory. The processional deities with Muthu Kumaraswamy in the centre and
parents on either side resembling the Somaskandar form are taken out in the
streets, when thousands avail that grand sight. Another unique feature of this
temple is - during nights, first worship is offered to this deity, and the next
to other deities. This Lord was eulogised by great saints such as Sambhandar,
Kumaragurupar, and he lifted many saranarthas. This temple has two thirthas
deemed very sacred and devotees bathe in them before worshipping. Among the
several adorable deities, Angaraka and Vinayaka take pride of place. The
sthalavriksha is Margosa and, it has a great legend.
It
lies 7 km of Sirkali, a famous pilgrim town of Tamilnadu and it is a rail head
itself, accessible by bus too.
