The legend of Murugan meeting Valli for the first, and the rebuffs he
received from that haughty-headed, virtuous hunter girl is said to have taken
place here and that self-same 'form of Vengai tree assumed by Muruga is
adored with great devotional fervour since then. It is recorded in the kanda
Purana that Murugan
developed hopeless passion for this chubby, ravishing young hunting girl during
his hunting expedition once. He tried to win her affection by conversation in
which that forest girl outwitted him out and out. He then transformed himself
into a Vengai tree, when his efforts eluded his grasp. With the invaluable
assistance of Vinayaka his elder brother, he was united with her in wedlock.
That episode took place here. Hence immense sanctity and indescribable
attraction. The archamurti is giving darsan with his lovely spouse Valli. This
Vengai tree is receiving reverent worship on the last Fridays of every Tamil
month, besides the regular and annual festivals. Thousands worship with utmost
devotion on that auspicious day.
It
is on the Nagarkoil - Tiruvananthapuram bus route, but one has to walk a
distance of one km to reach it. It is accessible by bus.
