Scriptures in several places visualised in unambiguous terms the glorious position of
Surya Bhagawan. He is equated with the greatest among gods.
He occupies the pre-eimenent place among the planets, and it is around him all the
other eight planets are revolving in their orbits since ,creation, at the instance of Lord Siva
according to Saivagamas. Suryamurti - Sun-god is one of the Ashtamurtis of Siva and stands for
Buddhignana aspect, representing the collective gnana of the whole mass of the animate world.
Further, this Vedic deity is deemed one of the forms of Vishnu also. He is worshipped both
independently and in association with Varuna - the Rain-god. He is praised in several contexts in
Rig Veda, and his popular and frequent form as Mitra finds mention in many places. On account of
the chief function of dispelling darkness and giving life to the animate world, he is fittingly called
Mitra. And this sticks to his name aptly.
And above all. he is one of the clearest natural phenomena visible in the sky. He is
Pratyaksha Daivam and also Karmasakshi. Surya Bhagawan is pervading like
Srimannarayana. the
entire universe and with his powerful rays he obliterates all impurities, and energizes
the whole
universes. He cures ailments, like leprosy and heart diseases. And there are several episodes of
the marvelous cure on praying to him ardently.
