The
big Padagaya tank greeting our eyes on crossing the Madadwara has a
very long legend. It is recorded in the puranas that Gayasura-a
powerful demon laid out his huge body measuring 125 yojanas by 60
yojanas at the behest of Brahma for doing a great yagna on it for
lokakalyana. When he lay with head at the sacred place called Gaya
in Bihar, his legs reached out Pithapuram, some thousands of
kilometers away. The lake is supposed to have his legs underneath.
So it is called Padagaya, a very sacred thirtha that relieves one of
all sins, if bathed. Thus this kshetra has awesome connections with
highest deities.
