KUTALAMANIKYAM

THE LEGENDS OF SANGAMESWAR

Yet there is one more additional name of this august deity. This Lord is also called 'Sangameswara - the Lord of Sangama, or Lord abiding in a place where two rivers merge with each other. In the ancient days, this present Irinjilakuda was located at the confluence or Sangam two rivers - Chalakkudin and Kurumalai. So he is called Sangameswara, considering him to be the cause of that Sangama.

As the rivers since changed their course, the name too is faded, rather forgotten. Yet the temple authorities are conducting the arratu annual festival of the temple on the banks of Chalakkudi one year, and Kurumalai river in the next year. This not only establishes the truth of the confluence of the rivers at this place, but glorifies the Lord's sovereignty over the two.
