The
origin of this famous temple is elaborately described in legends and
sthalapurana. And many incidents that occurred in the precincts are
imbued with mystery. Along with the moolavar Sri Rama, another
deity? Porkali Bhagawati too played a very great role and enhanced
tile9fory of the temple. It is a very big temple occupying six acres
of land making provision for parivara devatas of all sects, as a
matter of fact. The temple's pushkarini occupying two acres of land
is its another plus point. And it is the only temple in Kerala
having a tall pagoda covered with brass sheets instead of tiles as
seen here in all temples.
The
glory of this shrine is described in sacred scriptures in several
languages such as Kerala Mahatmyam in Sanskrit. Keralotpati in
Malayalam and Malabar Manual in English and devotional literature
too is embodying a great corpus of valuable information right from
the days of Agasthya to the present day. In the works of art many
critics shed enough
light on the architectural marvels. making this into a worth-seeing
holy temple of eternal importance.
