ELLORA

THE Ellora caves too are near Auranga - bad. They number 31.

The Ajanta caves contain scenes from the life of the Buddha. The Ellora caves contain mostly scenes from Hindu and Jain religious life. The most famous of the Ellora sculptures are in the Kailasa temple and the Indra Sabha. They were carved hundreds of years ago, and are still very beautiful.

At Ellora most of the images are of Hindu Gods. The Sivalinga, Chandrasekhara, and Siva with Uma or Parvati are the forms of God Siva that are shown. The story of Arjuna getting Pasupatastra, Ardhanari - swara, Kalyanasundara: are other well known figures. You have read the story of Arjuna getting the astra from Siva. In one of the images God Siva is half man, half woman that is, Ardhanariswara.
