ELLORA

Some of the ten avataras of God Vishnu figure in the sculpture. Ganapati, Brahma, Lakshmi, Saraswati are among the other Gods and Goddesses engraved in stone in the Ellora caves.

Inthe Ellora group there are eleven Viharas and one Chaitya. In one cave there is a sculpture of the seated Buddha.Some caves have places for storage.

The window and entrance of one of the Chaityas are shaped like a horseshoe.

The temple of Kailasa is the most beautiful work of art in Ellora. This big temple is cut out from one huge rock. Doorways, windows, staircases, rows of pillars are all chiselled from the same rock. A number of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are carved on the pillars. There are also a gopuram or tower, a nandi-mandapa and vimana The entrance has two storeys.

This temple looks like a chariot standing on the back of elephants.

Inside the other temples there are stone figures of elephants and lions.
