ELLORA

Many stories from the Puranas are carved in the panels. One of them is the story of Prahlada. The other is the killing of Tripura- sura by God Siva. The third is the story of the punishment God Vishnu administered to Emperor Bali.

The Dasavatara caves show Siva as Bhai- rava killing an Asura. There is also an engraving of Kali.

In other caves there are figures of Gandharvas, the divine musicians.

On the north of the Kailasa temple is the temple of Ravaneshwar.

Among the Jain caves, the Indra Sabha and Jagannath Sabha are the prominent ones. There is the figure of Mahavira in the first. There are also carvings of Yaksha and Yakshini.

The Jagannath Sabha has one storey. The Sabha's walls contain figures of Mahavira.

Other important sculptures of these Jain caves are those of Parshvanath and Gomateswar.

There are paintings too at Ellora. The temples of Ganesh and Kailasa havemany. A battle scene is one of the paintings. In the Rangamahal, there is a painting of the dancing Siva. We also see a painting of the flying Apsaras in the Jain caves.

When you grow up you must go and see the excellent works of art in the Ellora caves.
