Muslims,
Christians, Parsis and even Englishmen attended it.
There were in all 72 delegated from all parts of India.
Hume proposed the name of W.C. Bonnerjle, a lawyer of Calcutta, for the presidentship of
the conference. S. Subramania Aiyar seconded and K.T. Telang supported.
Thus on the 28th of December, 1885, at 12 noon, the first meeting took place.
The name of the conference was changed to the Indian National Congress. Thus was born the
Congress which brought us freedom in 1947 under the leadership of
Mahatma Gandhi.
Hume, the Englishman, is rightly called the Father of the Indian National Congress.
