EAST AND WEST, WHERE IS THE
BOUNDARY? |
|
If Western
religious groups really believe in the division of East and West, the first thing for them
to do would be to stop trying to convert the people of Asia. What they believe in is not
that there is a rigid division between East and West, but that the East should be
Westernized. In fact Western religions in Asia are usually not promoting the scientific,
rational or progressive side of Western culture, but imposing on the East the irrational,
unscientific and unspiritual part of Western religions that is being rejected in the
Western world, and which will only serve to keep the people of Asia backward and bound by
medieval superstitions.
Japan has become a modern Asian culture that can compete with the West in terms of science
and business by adapting its own Buddhist and Shinto traditions to the conditions of the
modern world, not by becoming Christian or Islamic. The Philippines, on the other hand,
perhaps the most staunch Christian nation of Asia, remains among the most backward. |
