EAST AND WEST, WHERE IS THE
BOUNDARY? |
|
Today the
division has often been simplified with the materialistic West versus the spiritual East
(though it would be more appropriate to regard all of the cultures of the world today as
materialistic with the spiritual East being more the East of the past than the present).
What is Western culture and what constitutes it? Western or European culture has a base of
Judeo-Christian religious and Greco-Roman intellectual values, on a diversity of
predominately Indo-European languages, peoples and their native beliefs. Out of this arose European art and culture, and the developments of
modern science and technology. Western culture therefore is a polyglot affair, put
together from different sources over time, and hardly a pure breed of any type. The
Western world looks back on two primary cultural eras, ancient Greece and the Renaissance.
