PRACTICAL VEDANTA, THE REAL
MESSAGE OF SWAMI VIVEKANANDA |
|
He felt the
superiority of the spiritual cultures of Asia, particularly India, over the materialistic
cultures of the West. While he recognized the problems of modern India he looked up to the
West only for practical help, not for spiritual or religious guidance. He traveled all
over the world as a kind of missionary for Hinduism, promoting Hindu culture and values,
and regarded its spiritual teachings as valid for all humanity. He was the greatest missionary of modern Hinduism and paved the way
for Hindu teachers to travel throughout the world and establish various centers, in which
footsteps many have followed. Yet for Vivekananda the essence of Hinduism was
Vedanta, the way of Self-realization, not the Hindu social structure dating from medieval
times. |
