For instance, modem
science and explorations have given us more correct ideas of the universe around us as
well as of the history and geography of our own planet than those which our ancestors
entertained, and yet we are still made to repeat the old formulas of
Jambu dwipa and
Kali-yuga. Here is plenty of work for those who have both religious zeal and enlightened
scholarship. Our ritual is in great need of
reform. It has to be simplified and rationalized, if the rising generation is to be
rescued from loss of faith. It has to be brought nearer to the actual faith of the people,
if it is to exert a wholesome influence and play its legitimate part in religion. But the
work has to be done with great caution and only by those who are competent to do it.
Meanwhile it is our duty to get on with the existing ritual and
make the best use of it, as we are getting on with English spelling regardless of its
illogicalities.
