HINDU RITUALS AND MYTHS |
|
But ritualism has
also its limitations and dangers. Am extensive ritual system, while ensuring the continued
existence of a religion, perpetuates only a low type of it appealing to the senses and
crudely making concrete what should be abstract and spiritual. A cultured mind is often
repelled by the practices of a popular religion with their low appeal.
The directors of popular religion defend such practices by saying that the masses require
that kind of appeal. But our masses are not all so ignorant as our priests make
them out
to be. Moreover our great temples and places of pilgrimage are meant not only for the masses,
but also for the
classes, If ritualism perpetuates a low type of religion in these places, the classes
which resort to them may become spiritually starved and lose all faith in religion.
