The
legend goes on to say that once there was a fight for ten thousand years between Lord
Indra and a Raksbasa by name Taraka. Ultimately Taraka won the battle. The Devatas then
got frightened and went to Lord Maha Vishnu for help. Lord Vishnu told them that
Tarakasura was a great Siva Bhakta and a worshipper of Lord Siva, and that be derived much
of his strength from his worship of Lord Siva, who was greatly pleased with it, and as
such, it would not be proper for Lord Vishnu to killTarakasura who was a Siva Bhakta of a
high calibre.
Therefore Lord Vishnu advised the Deva- tas to go and pray to Lord Siva himself, and
represent their grievances to him.
Lord Siva who heard the Devatas also told them that it would not be possible for him
also to kill Tarakasura because, whatever might be his other shortcoming, Taraka- sura was
a great Shiva Bhakta and that Lord Siva himself was unable to harm a sincere Siva Bhakta.
This interesting legend shows how the efficacy of Bhakti so completely over whelms the
Lord, that the Lord himself finds himself not competent to deal with one who is a great
Bhakta.
