PREFACE |
|
Naturally the
legends form a very rich fund. The -whole of 'North Bihar is practically saturated with
the cult of Sri Ramchandra and Sita. This is no wonder because North Bihar contains
Mithila where Rama's consort, Sita, was born. Magadha has, naturally, legends more
associated with Buddhism and Jainism. Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu had visited Chotanagpur and
the cult of Vaishnavism had won over even a large number of the Adivasis in Chotanagpur.
The Jagarnath cult had found its express on in a number of Jagarnath temples in
Chotanagpur. Vaishnavism had brought Bengal and Orissa much nearer to Bihar. A scientific study of the many legends associated with the Bihar
temples has yet to be undertaken. The same legend has taken different shapes in different
areas for different reasons. The reasons, if delved in, would indicate different
culture-complexes. |
