Some of thew
places are Jankigarh, near Narkatiaganj railway station in Champaran district, Panchpahari
and Chotapahari in the vicinity of Patna, Gorodih in Bhagalpur district and Ghorakatora in
Gaya district. There are also art remains of the Sunga-Kusana period and the following,
ages. The Bihar specimens of sculptural art, structural remain, terracottas, etc.
have achieved world-wide renown. Even now some excavations are going on at Vaishali, in
Muzaffarpur district, and at Patharghatta, in Bhagalpur district, yielding rich finds. Both the places had ancient temples. Patharghatta is said to be the
site of the ancient Vikramshila University. Various coins of different periods have also
been found in Bihar. In spite of the fluvial action many of the inscriptions that have
been found supply fertile historical data. Bihar sculpture found its best artistic
expression in the bronzes of Kurkihar and Nalanda. |
