PREFACE

Most of the images of the Gupta era found in Kurkihar and elsewhere have, been exquisitely carved and have a radiant look. The Buddha image found at Sultanganj, and now preserved in the Birmingham Museum, has evoked the admiration of the world.

Temples in India are intimately associated with arch-aeologeal remains. 'Incidentally, it may be mentioned that, although most of the present-day temples in Bihar are not very old, Bihar has splendid archaeological remains dating back to very early times. In Raigir we have probably the earliest archaeological finds in the whole of Eastern India, in the shape of a fortification wall and various other stone specimens. Indeed Bihar has numerous archaeological remains of the Mauryan and later ages and there are a number of stupas, chaityas, excavated eaves, inscriptions, rock edicts, pillars, etc. Spread all over the State is unexcavated mounds and sites, which may still yield valuable specimens and, probably, the remains of temples.
