THE GODDESS WHO HAS PERIODS |
|
It is a wonder
of wonders, that even today the do which is cast in Panchaloha gets her Periods, a
phenomenon which is not heard of in any other temple. "In olden days it used to
occur regularly, every month now only three or four times a year," said Shri Madhavan
Nambudiri, the melsanti or the head priest of the temple speaking to this writer.
He or his assistant (Kizhusanti) on opening the Srikoil early morning removes the
nirmalayam (Previous a decoration of the deity) and hands it over to the Varrier attendant
along with the white udayada (petticoat) without looking at it. The Varrier examines the
dress closely an if there are signs of bleeding sends it to Thazhamon Maths' the
traditional residence of the temple Tantri. Their lady of the house scrutinizes the cloth
again and confirms the menses.
