These
48 poets were received with honor by the Pandyan king. God Sundareswara became their head
and a College of these famous Tamil poets was formed.
There were many impostors, who troubled these 48 persons so as to get a place in the
Sangam. To set right the disputes or
confusion created by the aspiring poets, Lord Sundareswara gave them a gold plank, which
could contract and expand, to
accommodate only 48 genuine poets at a time. The plank would throw off the impostors. But
when the time of Tiruvalluvar, the famous writer of Kural came, things happened
differently.
These 48 persons did not approve of Tiruvalluvar
as a poet, and, his Kural as a great piece of spiritual work. The book was placed on the
golden plank and the miraculous plank made the book to expand in size till at last all the
48 original occupants were thrown out of their seats.
