It
is in keeping with this legend that the shrine of Subrahmanya is built on the hillock and
that of Siva below the mound.
There are three beautiful gopurams in the temple, on the eastern, Western and southern
sides. The gopuram on the southern side is the biggest of all and is known as Rajagopuram,
The temple measures 300 feet by 296 feet and there are three prakarams.
Lord Siva enshrined at the foot of the hillock is known as Sundaresar and the Devi is
known as Meenakshi. Once the Pandya king, Varaguna Pandya, who was ruling the country with
his capital atMadurai, undertook a pilgrimage to Tiruvidamarudur to wash off Brahmahatti
(Brahminicide) Dosha. On the way he halted at Swami- malai. |
