The
tradition says that once a blind man who came here to pray to Lord Muruga (Subrahmanya)
got back his sight when he worshipped first the Vinayaka here, and since then the Vinayaka
came to be known as Netra, Vinayaka (Sight-giving Vinayaka- Net means eye). There are many
small shrines in the prakaram, dedicated to Agastya, Lakshmi, Saraswati, Visalakshi and
other deities of le importance.
In one corner Subrahmanya under the name of Sabha
has been enshrined with Devayanai. This is the only place where
Subrahmanya can be seen with Devayanai alone. Swaminatha is also known as Jnana Pandita,
Jnana Desika, Gurunatha, etc., as he initiated his father into the significance of the
Mantra. |
