TANJORE |
|
Tanjore workmen are
specially reputed for their skill in making silver articles. Jewels made here draw great
appreciation. Gold inlay on silver, called Gangajemin, was once specialized in Tanjore.
Enameling of jewels by a peculiar method was another craft of Tanjore. The work was called
Munnkkachi. Now this art has disappeared. Calligraphy or the art of beautiful and elegant
writing was at the peak during the period of the Maratha rulers of Tanjore.
Festival days: Every month, the day on which the ruling star is Satabhishag is treated as
a festival as that was the ruling star at the time of Raja Raja's birth. The other
festival is Krittika day in the month of Kartika. The annual festival for 9 days is
celebrated in the month of Visakha, during which the drama of Raja Rajeswara is also
enacted. |
