ASOKA AS A PILGRIM

Buddha Gaya was the next halt in their onward march. They feasted their eyes with the splendour of the Bodhi-tree that had transformed the ordinary Prince into that of a World Teacher. After paying due obeisance, the emperor gave a largesse of a hundred thousand gold pieces to the people, besides building a grand Chaitya.

They visited next Rishipattana--the Present Saranath, near Banaras, where the venerable master proclaimed his new faith to the world first, and it was from here that "the Wheel of Dharma" started its onward march. The people in addition to enjoying the sight of the royal pilgrim received his munificence.
