ASOKA
AS A PILGRIM |
|
Many
are the ways prescribed by the scriptures to expiate sins; for,
sinless state alone ensures admission into heaven and makes it fit
to enjoy eternal bliss. It is the ambition of everyone to strive for
purging of sins during his short sojourn in the world. Among the
many that have been enjoined on mankind, going on a pilgrimage to
holy places is one of supreme significance. Visiting of the sacred
shrines, necessarily involves bathing in the holy rivers, giving
alms to the poor and coming into contact with people of diverse
faiths and different traditions. Hence the pilgrims return home with
contentment and unbounded joy.
Soon
after embracing Buddhism, Asoka ardently desired to make every one
of his subjects fit to enter heaven and partake the ethereal bliss.
And to enjoy communion with God, besides feasting the five senses
with the celestial sights, scents and sounds.
