Silpasastra,
like any other has its norms and limitations. In making icons, the artists
strictly adhere to them and make' their profession ennobling and all
commendable. As their work confines to temples - the places of worship, they
evince extra-ordinary care and interest in making the worshipful idols. It
applies to painting and allied arts too. The proportionate dimension of idols in
their sitting, standing, lying postures etc., always conform to the rules laid
down. If some uncommon, or extra-ordinary feature peeps at the viewers, it has
its back ground, and is done deliberately at the instance of the builders. So
their whims and fancies never appear on the scene.
