Confronted with unaffordable hardships and insoluble problems threatening
existence, man looks up and with palms joined prays to heaven to illumine his
path and grant strength to cut the Gordian knot. And takes vows of different
kinds for instant relief and sure release from the tight grip of Satanic forces.
His faith on realisation of follies starts escalating and goes on propelling
till he is hurled at the feet of the Almighty Providence for refuge permanently.
That All-powerful Supreme God sheds compassionate mellowed light then, and saves
the penitent devotees with miracles of infinite variety.
On
crossing the ocean of grief, and when placed under the all-protective umbrella,
man thinks of redeeming his debt in cash or kind as vowed during crises. The
redemption is made through numerous ways and temple chiefs have established
means to fulfilling the object. Thus come into existence several sevas,
vazhivadus etc. They vary from temple to temple. And some of them extremely strange and appear ridiculous even to the staunch theists. As they are strange,
so is the tradition, but seen through the eyes of those who took vows thus, they
are justified on all counts. Offering hair, tulabharam of new born first baby,
naivedyam of several kinds, currency, coins, animals etc. is a common place
tradition in practice and temples are making provisions and arrangements for
redemption. And the income that comes is becoming the backbone of their
existence.
