URAIYUR
- TOPLESS GARBHAGRIHA |
|
Any
place of worship--modern or ancient is adorned with a tower-vimana erected over
the garbhagriha and it beckons the devotees to pay homage to it and it is equal
to worshipping the adorable deity installed inside. In certain temples, the
vimana is higher and grandeur than the one on the mahadwar, as evidenced in the
case of Puri Jagannath temple, why the Orissan architectural style gives
prominence to the tower raised on the garbhagriha than the one on the Mahadwar.
It is a common feature in the Dravidian style of temple construction to raise a
smaller one on the garbhagriha. But temples without top--ceiling on the
garbhagriha evokes wonder. There are only a few of that category and among them
the Venkaliamman temple lying near the famous Uraiyur Vaishnava temple
stands out prominent. And it is a newly built shrine luring a steady stream of
devotees throughout the year. There are several mini-shrines around the
garbhagriha installed with many deities and they are worshipped with due
rituals. Several kinds of prayer services are conducted every day. Among the
deities, Murugan and Vinayaka command greater attention.
