Here
is a hoary tradition of Utsavamurtis of Kalahastheeswar and Gnana Prasunambika
taken in procession round the hill, circumambulating the entire, holy region
going by the name of Giri Pradakshinam. It is a star-attraction and occupies a
prominent place on the temple calendar. It is celebrated twice a year - once on
the immediate succeeding day of Sankranthi, and the other on the ninth day of
Sivaratri Mahaparvandina. Being a gala function, thousands and thousands of
persons, both locals and visitors from far off places participate with unbounded
enthusiasm. Instrumental music and ceremonious splendour breaking through eyeful
decoration of the archamurti heighten its significance and make
it an unforgettable event by spending lavishly on
illumination etc. On the way at several places, the deities halt to receive
prayers from the villages, who feed and supply drinks to the participants
deeming it Mahabhagyam. In the days of yore, the ruling kings starting from the
temple were proceeding to welcome the processional deities on their return trip
to their seats, and it was called 'Yeduruseva'. With the rule of democratic
government, those age-old traditions are relegated to background. Yet, the pomp
and splendour, piety and gaiety of it are still breathing life and lifting the
souls of participants. It is a much-awaited event.
