DESCENT
The
story goes that Sahyamuni desiring to release
the people from sins was doing penance on Sahyadri Hills. His ghora
tapas and its cause pleased Mahavishnu and he decided to send down
to Mother Earth a potent force to cleanse the people from sins. It
so coincided that Brahma too was making a plea for lifting mankind
from sins. So he directed Krishnaveni to descend to earth to fulfill
the objects of the two longing for lokoddharana. So it descended to
the earth on the exact spot of the sage's penance, so that he too
could partake a share of the merit, the- river going to gain by
liberating people with its sacred waters krishna descending at that
auspicious moment started flowing down the peaks. And on the way, it
liberated those, who bathed and drank its waters. Several sacred
shrines came into existence on the banks along its long course. When
it neared the sea exactly at the present Vijayawada territory, its
hilly area obstructed its perennial free flow.
