Mahanandi, the premier
shrine of the nine Nandi Kshetras located in the Nallamalai hills, a long range
of hills lying in the Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh has a rich spiritual
wealth manifesting in many unique features, like a huge Nandi stature gushing
out a steady stream of crystal clear water perennially for over centuries;
Swamyambhu linga with cow's hoof marks on the top, and the Mother's temple with
a potent Sri Chakra installed by Sri Adi Sankara. Its legends are many and their
queerness immense. There are several mini-shrines in the courtyards facing west
and enshrining the holy parivaradevathas said to have been installed by
maharshis and celestial divinities in accordance with the sastric injunctions.
Its location amidst Nature's bounteous colourful scenery is an additional
attraction to its hoary antiquity. It is a much sought after picnic spot of this
region.
