THE TEMPLE:
The famous Kali temple is built on the bank of Bhagirathi called Kalighat, one
of the busiest centres in the metropolitan Calcutta. It lies surrounded by big
buildings on all sides with shopping arcades to front The plinth area of the
main mandir rises about three feet from the ground and has flights of steps on
all sides. The huge image of Mother Kali is installed on a broad pedestal in a
hollow depression of about 10 feet below the surface.
Tire image in standing posture is giganctic in size is draped in red dress. She
has three eyes and reveals in rudra.
The potent weapons held in hands and frightful visage with broad eyes and
sharp incisors strike terror. The garbha griha is quite big in size and has
broad flight of steps to reach the feet of the Mother for worship. Normally the
devotees offer prayers
at the dwara itself. The unmanageable crowds almost from morn to night speaks the
unprecedented popularity of this Sakti-Peetha. There are mini-shrines for Lord
Siva, Ganesh etc., around tile main mandir.
