The
sacrosanct glory of this Mother Durga came to lime light with Kalidasa, the
immortal Sanskrit dramatist whose literary eminence gained interplanetary
recognition and ardent emulation. According to sthalapurana; the boy Kalidasa, a
dunce among the students was sent by his friends to this Kali temple popular as
Durga mandir, one midnight to test his courage. And he must smear the face of
tile image with black powder Unknown to worldly guiles and wiles, he dared.
During the smearing of her face with powder. it appears, taking her real form
she asked the reason Innocent to tile core, he gave it out Pleased with is
divine innocence site blessed him to become the greatest man of letters of
eternal fame. That hoary temple stands now
in Uchaitha in Darbhanga district of Bengal in the renovated state It is an
unostentatious small temple lying on the bank of a tank with a circular dome
facing east. It is a single
celled temple with a vast verandah in front. The image of Durga enshrined to the
cell is about two feet in height and made of black granite. The images of Brahma
and Chandra are installed on her two sides. Another small image of Kali is
also found to the left of Durga. The cell also houses the images of Siva, Vishnu,
Ganesh and Hanuman. Odd it seems, that such august deity was multilated-she is
now sans head and hands. yet worship is made regularly with great devotional
zeal It has a, fantastic background.
Later
one devout philanthropist Maharajadhiraja by name Rameswar Singh desired to
reinstate the head of the image. Accordingly,
he ordered for it and made ready.
