The
mythological importance of this holy shrine begins with Vasudeva's efforts in
keeping safe of his eighth issue and carrying the back to joil female child born to
Yasoda.
As the epic says, this female child after predicting the
impending disaster of Kamsa flow into sky and vanished to his petrifaction. And
it is said that after that momentous pronouncement she settled down here and
carried out several beneficial acts for Viswasreyas. Among them, killing of
Sumbhu Nisumbhas tops the list. It is one of the sakti-Peethas and tantric
literature glows eloquent in delineating the sacredness of this place.
Another distinguished feature that it
embodies is the
existence of the icons of Trimurtinis - Mahalakshmi in the name of Vinshyavasini,
Mahakali in the name of Kalikouli and Mahasaraswati in the name of
Ashtabhujamata. On account of its pouranic importance and existence of Tri Saktis
it is luring lakhs of theists in steady, regular steams of bhaktas throughout
the year. For north India, it is an indispensable pilgrim centre who visit in
lakhs during periodical festivals and spend lavishly on illumination and
decorative items. The festivals too last for weeks and confer mental tranquility
