Soon the two set in motion a strategy to destroy the demons. She created a teen
aged ravishing beauty her own amsa and named her Kali, and Vishnu changed
himself into an old man. They reached the place of the two formidable brothers.
The brothers captivated by the unusual charms of Kali asked the old man to give
his daughter to them. Crafty Vishnu said that he could give only to the best
warrior of extra ordinary prowess. The elder being very mighty and clever killed
the younger. When approached for her hand, Kali
assumed dreadful form and killed him easily. There afterwards devas enjoyed
restful days and peaceful nights.
As
Ambaran lived in this place, it was called Ambar and due to his death by Kali,
her name was suffixed to it. So it became Ambar Makaalan and it is one of the
Sakti-peethas mentioned in the Tantric texts. Later, due to popular usage it is
called Ambakarathur.
