The
legendary part of this holy shrine takes us to the Kritayuga, and the
protaganists of this fascinating tale are Uma and Mahavishnu, who in their joint
venture rid devas of the asurabadha. According to Puranas; once sage Durvasa, a
great Siva bhakta met a blooming damsel named Madhulila during his aakasagamana
going to avail the darsan of Lord Siva, his ishtadaivam.
This frivolous girl asked his blessings for the birth of noble children. Being
short tempered and further supplication seemed unworthy, he cursed her to get
noble children. The curse ran its course and she gave birth two sons - Ambaran
and Amban. When she bewailed before Sukracharya, narrating her misfortune,
he advised them to meditate on Paramapureeswarar and get boons to take revenge
on devas. They did and inauguated reign of terror, and tortured their
enemies day in and day out. Unable to stand against them. Devendra with all
devas met Brahma, who in turn took them to Vishnu. Explaining the
difficulty all met Brahmapureeswarar. Listening to plight, he entrusted this
onerous task to Uma and Vishnu, as he could not due to showering of boons on
them already.
